Home performance upgrades

Home performance contracting includes looking at everything from lighting to insulation, from the boiler in your basement to the air sealing in your attic, to solve everything from moisture problems to energy waste and beyond.

A relatively new field grown out of an increased awareness of the need to address the poor performance of our existing homes, the goal of Home Performance contracting is to fix them. We do so by maximizing energy efficiency and building durability, ensuring the healthiest possible indoor air quality, and evaluating the relationships between your home’s various components to ensure that they’re all functioning as they were designed to.

The result is a home that is more durable, more comfortable, more energy efficient and better for the environment and future generations—exactly how a home should be.

Benefits of Home Performance Include:

  • Improved comfort
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Reduced heating bills
  • Reduced cooling bills
  • Fewer drafts
  • Increased building durability
  • Improved building health & safety
  • Better indoor air quality
  • and more.

Home energy audits & energy assessments

A home energy audit is the first step on the path toward a more comfortable, more affordable, healthier home. Using a variety of high-tech, state-of-the-art tools, we're able to identify the key areas where your home is wasting energy, and recommend the most cost-effective improvements for maximum comfort, minimum energy bills, and optimal indoor air quality and building health and safety.

Our approach in conducting home energy audits is to take a comprehensive, whole-house assessment of the home, which distinguishes our "whole-house energy audit" from the "clipboard audits" offered by many utilities, box stores, and companies that offer a discounted audit as a means to sell products or services.

Our whole-house energy audit looks at the building envelope (which inludes all the components that make up your home's outer shell, including windows, doors, insulation levels, and the level of air leakage in between building materials); all combustion equipment including boilers, furnaces and water heaters; and the movement of air within the home to ensure that the air you and your family are breathing is fresh, healthy and safe. During the audit, we use an infrared camera to identify air leakage and deficient insulation, a blower door to measure the rate of air infiltration in the home, and a duct blaster test to determine whether your ducts are well-sealed, among other tools.

Fiberglass Blanket Insulation (Batts)

Fiberglass batt insulation is perhaps the most cost effective insulation product for new construction and for installation during renovations, remodels and additions. The key to having quality fiberglass batt insulation performance is installation quality: we work to ensure that all of our installations are done properly, meaning that batts are cut for a precise fit around electrical boxes and wires and other obstructions, and that potential for air leakage is minimized.

Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation

Blown in fiberglass insulation is a cost effective alternative to batt insulation. Blowing in fiberglass reduces the chances for air leakage, as the smaller particles fill all cracks and gaps. Fiberglass insulation is fire retardant; and with an R-value of around 3 per inch, a home insulated with fiberglass insulation will be cozier, quieter, and more energy efficient than an uninsulated home.

Sprayed urethane foam insulation

Spray foam insulation is a state-of-the-art insulation product that dramatically increases a home's thermal performance. With a superior R-value and unmatched air sealing capabilities, it reduces air leakage while providing the best thermal performance of any insulation product on the market.

High R-Value

Spray polyurethane foam has an R-value (thermal resistance) of approximately 6 per inch of installed insulation, making it one of the highest performance insulation products on the market. This means that your home will be warmer, and less drafty, even in conventionally framed construction.

Air Sealing

Spray polyurethane foam fills all the cracks and gaps within the cavities that it fills, avoiding the common problem of air leakage that plagues other types of insulation such as fiberglass batts. This reduces drafts, and prevents infiltration of moisture and harmful gases.

Reduces Moisture and Mold

Because of the superior air sealing properties of SPF (spray polyurethane foam), moisture is less likely to enter your building once it's been insulated with spray foam. This reduces the risk of mold, as well as the risks of rot and structural damage that accompany water infiltration.

Closed Cell Foam

We offer closed cell spray foam products. Closed cell provides a superior air and moisture barrier, making it the most effective insulation available for energy performance.
